Cooperstown, N.Y. – Bassett Healthcare Network’s Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) recently received high praise when they received the Outstanding Clinical Practice Award from the American College of Nurse-Midwives. “I think I speak for everyone on the team when I say this is deeply meaningful,” says Laura O’Shea, CNM at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown. “The American College of Nurse-Midwives is the primary professional organization that represents midwives in the nation. This is recognition from those who know midwifery the best.”
The American College of Nurse-Midwives weighs a range of criteria when evaluating clinical practice using measurable, outcome-oriented standards. Evaluators pay special attention to the elements considered hallmarks of midwifery: evidence-based care, shared decision-making, individualized care, and judicious use of intervention, among others. They also consider the full scope of services provided by midwives. Although midwives are popularly associated with childbirth, they care for women throughout the lifecycle, including obstetrics, gynecology, and cancer screenings. “This recognition is a reflection of the countless hours our CNMs spend advocating for their patients, continuously seeking ways to improve health outcomes, and fostering a nurturing environment for those in their care,” says Jennifer Hecox, Women’s Health Service Line Director for Bassett Healthcare Network. “It highlights not only their clinical excellence but also their compassion and understanding — qualities that are vital in this field. I am proud to work alongside such talented individuals. Their hard work and dedication inspire all of us to strive for excellence. Many thanks for their commitment to our mission and for making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.” Certified Nurse Midwives have long played an essential role in Women’s Health at Bassett Healthcare Network. There are currently 8 midwives at Bassett working out of Herkimer Health Center, Delhi Health Center, FoxCare Center in Oneonta, Hamilton-Madison Health Center, and Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown. “All of us in Women’s Health were delighted by the news of this well-deserved honor,” says Samuel S. Badalian, MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology for Bassett Healthcare Network. “This recognition speaks to their exceptional dedication, skill, and compassionate care for our patients. The care we provide at Bassett is elevated by their work.” Bassett’s record of successful vaginal births after cesarean section was one particular area where Bassett CNMs stood out against other programs nationally.
